Digne-les-Bains is usually associated with lavender, thermal waters and the sunlit landscapes of Haute-Provence, but the mountains surrounding the town preserve another, much older story.
Long before the Alps existed, before humans and even before the landscapes of modern Europe had taken shape, this part of Provence lay beneath an ancient sea. Few places make that extraordinary fact as tangible as the Dalle aux Ammonites and the nearby Musée Promenade, two complementary sites that provide an excellent introduction to the geological heritage of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Haute-Provence.
A Wall from an Ancient Sea
The Dalle aux Ammonites is one of those geological sites whose impact is difficult to appreciate from photographs alone. At first sight, it appears to be an enormous inclined wall of grey limestone beside the road leading into the Bès valley. Look more carefully, however, and spirals begin to emerge from the rock. Then more spirals appear, followed by still more, until one realizes that almost the entire surface is covered with fossilized shells.
Around 1,550 ammonites are preserved here across approximately 350 square metres, with some of the largest specimens reaching around 70 centimetres in diameter. The official Haute-Provence Geopark dates this extraordinary fossilized seabed to roughly 198 million years ago, during the Early Jurassic. The site was also included in 2022 among the world’s 100 geological heritage sites recognized for their international significance.
These ammonites were marine cephalopods, distant relatives of today’s squid, octopuses and nautiluses. They lived in enormous numbers in prehistoric seas and developed their characteristic coiled shells into a remarkable variety of forms. After death, their shells accumulated on the seabed, became buried beneath sediment and were gradually transformed into fossils.
Millions of years later, geological forces responsible for the formation of the Alps lifted and tilted those ancient marine sediments, while erosion eventually exposed what had once been horizontal seabed.
The result is what visitors see today: an ancient underwater cemetery turned almost vertically toward the sky.
Standing in front of it creates a peculiar sense of scale. The road, cars, trees and surrounding mountains belong to the familiar human world, while the rock face immediately beside them represents a moment almost 200 million years distant. What was once the bottom of a Jurassic sea now rises above the ground in the foothills of the Alps.
The fossils remain embedded in the rock rather than being extracted and displayed individually in museum cases, which makes the site particularly impressive. Instead of simply looking at a collection of fossils, visitors are looking directly at the geological layer in which the animals were preserved.
When Provence Was Underwater
The Dalle aux Ammonites also helps explain something that initially seems almost paradoxical about the geology of Haute-Provence: why are marine fossils found throughout a mountainous landscape?
The answer lies in the immense geological changes that created southern Europe.
During the Early Jurassic, this region was covered by sea. Ammonites and nautiluses swam through its waters, while belemnites and other marine organisms occupied the same ecosystem. Their remains accumulated in sediments over enormous periods of time. Much later, movements of the Earth’s crust compressed, folded and raised these sedimentary layers during the formation of the Alps.
The mountains therefore contain the remains of the seas that existed before them.
This is one reason fossil hunting and geological exploration can be so fascinating around Digne-les-Bains. Road cuttings, ravines, exposed marl slopes and folded layers of limestone frequently reveal fragments of a world that disappeared millions of years ago. The landscape itself becomes something resembling an enormous open-air geological museum.
At the Dalle aux Ammonites, that idea becomes particularly easy to understand because the evidence is visible on such a dramatic scale.
Musée Promenade — More Than a Museum
The nearby Musée Promenade approaches the same story from a very different direction.
Calling it simply a museum is somewhat misleading, because much of the experience takes place outdoors. The site, located in Parc Saint-Benoît above Digne-les-Bains, combines geological interpretation, natural history, landscaped gardens, water, walking paths and contemporary art. It is also the headquarters and interpretation centre of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Haute-Provence.
From the entrance, paths climb gradually through a surprisingly lush landscape toward the Maison des Remparts. Streams accompany parts of the walk, while small waterfalls, shaded vegetation and patches of exposed rock create an atmosphere very different from the dry Provençal scenery only a short distance away.
This contrast is part of the attraction.
The meeting of Mediterranean and Alpine influences gives the park considerable biological diversity, while the Saint-Benoît spring supplies water to the site. Rather than moving directly from one exhibition room to another, visitors wander through the landscape itself, discovering geological features and artworks along the way.
The climb eventually rewards visitors with broad views over Digne-les-Bains and the surrounding mountains, making the setting almost as important as the museum collections.
Fossils, Butterflies, Water and Art
Inside the exhibition spaces, the immense geological history of Haute-Provence becomes easier to interpret. The displays cover roughly 300 million years of Earth’s history and explain how ancient seas, tectonic movements, erosion and other geological processes produced the landscapes visible around Digne today. Fossils, including ammonites and evidence of marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs, help reconstruct the environments that existed here long before the Alps appeared.
Outside, however, the experience changes again.
One of the most attractive parts of the Musée Promenade is its butterfly garden. The combination of Mediterranean and mountain climates creates favourable conditions for biodiversity, and vegetation has been selected specifically to support butterflies and their caterpillars. More than a hundred indigenous butterfly species may be observed in the park during the appropriate seasons.
There is also the Japanese-inspired Kamaishi Garden, whose design uses different stages of flowering to symbolize stages of human life. Its paths, bridge, pond, lanterns and Japanese architectural elements create a quiet and contemplative contrast with the geological themes elsewhere in the park. The connection with Kamaishi is particularly appropriate because the Japanese city, twinned with Digne-les-Bains, possesses a full-size mould of the famous ammonite slab.
Contemporary art appears throughout the park as well, sometimes almost disappearing into the surrounding vegetation. The official Geopark highlights works associated with internationally known artists including Andy Goldsworthy and Joan Fontcuberta.
The result is an unusual mixture of science and contemplation. One moment the visitor is thinking about Jurassic oceans and fossilized creatures; a few minutes later the experience is about flowing water, butterflies, trees or an artwork encountered unexpectedly beside a forest path.
Two Sites That Belong Together
The Dalle aux Ammonites and Musée Promenade work particularly well when visited together.
The first provides the immediate encounter: hundreds upon hundreds of fossil shells embedded in a real Jurassic seabed. The second provides the wider explanation, placing those fossils within the much larger story of vanished oceans, Alpine mountain building, changing ecosystems and the geological evolution of Haute-Provence.
They are also physically close to one another. A recently created voie douce links the two sites, which lie less than a kilometre apart, while there is also an easy 3.5-kilometre walking circuit beginning at the Musée Promenade, passing the ammonite slab and returning to the museum area. The tourism office describes this loop as an easy walk of approximately 1½ hours with around 140 metres of elevation gain.
For anyone interested in geology, fossils or simply unusual landscapes, this corner of Digne-les-Bains deserves considerably more than a quick roadside stop.
The Dalle aux Ammonites demonstrates that some of the most extraordinary museums have no glass cases at all. Their exhibits remain exactly where nature placed them, locked into layers of stone and waiting for erosion—and human curiosity—to expose them again.
The Musée Promenade then adds the missing context, reminding us that geology is not merely a collection of old rocks and fossils. It is the history of landscapes themselves: seas becoming mountains, sediments becoming cliffs, living creatures becoming stone, and hundreds of millions of years compressed into something we can observe during a single afternoon.
Together, the two sites offer one of the most accessible and memorable introductions to the deep geological history of Haute-Provence.
